When I first met my husband, he loved to play basketball. Unfortunately, three months later his knee moved on him and he ended up with a torn ACL and meniscus.
His natural recovery time was not too bad, but he was no longer able to safely play any type of sports. My husband’s knee would give out on him pretty regularly and he would have to ice it for a few days before it felt normal again.
When our second child was 9 months old, we decided it was a good time to get my husband’s ACL repaired. At that point, the doctors had told us he would be up and walking when the surgery was over. Then the doctors casually asked if we wanted them to repair the meniscus if it was savable. That turned out to be a recovery time we were not prepared for. My husband could not walk for six weeks and I am so thankful my mother-in-law could come take care of him while I took care of our two kiddos under two.
I’m not sure anyone can really be prepared for healing after surgery. In 1Peter 5:7 we are taught to “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” God wants to be there for us through these strenuous times.
