8 Wise Prayers for Finding a Therapist or Counselor

Do you need to find a therapist?  Do you need God’s guidance to locate a counselor?

Whatever is going on in your life, if you’ve come to this page on this website, then you likely need some guidance from a trained therapist or counselor.  It’s okay!  No one can get through life, with all of its struggles, trials, and surprises alone.  Each of us, at some point, will need advice from someone else.

The plans we have for our life likely won’t succeed fully if we don’t seek out and receive guidance from others.

“Plans fail for lack of counsel,
    but with many advisers they succeed” (Proverbs 15.22, NIV).

Although we are not guiding a nation, state, or city, we are seeking to guide ourselves or our families.  Yet, we are fallible and we need help and counsel from others.  We need wisdom that is not our own.  The sage writer of Proverbs gives us helpful advice to seek out direction from other people.

“For lack of guidance a nation falls,
    but victory is won through many advisers” (Proverbs 11.14, NIV).

The victory we win may be a better relationship with our spouse, or a less stressful life for a child or teenager. Victory may look like less anxiety or depression and more peace and hope.  It’s clear, though, that at some point in our lives we may need a counselor or therapist.

There is no shame in trying to find one or going to talk with one.  In fact, it’s one of the best, most emotionally healthy things you can do.

Let one of these eight wise prayers to find a therapist or counselor be of help to you.  You can change the details of the prayer to fit your unique situation.  If you have come to the conclusion that you need help from a counselor, then isn’t it a good idea to ask God to help you find the one who will work best for you?

Prayer to Find a Therapist for a Couple

Dear God,  we come to you in prayer because we need help.  After months of bad communication, or no communication, we both have come to the conclusion that our marriage relationship needs help.  We love each other enough to know that we’re headed in a bad direction and want to avoid a bad end.

Please help us find a solid, trained marriage therapist we both can connect with and trust.  We know we need help because whatever we’re doing, or not doing, isn’t working.  Neither of us can see what’s blocking us, or causing the problem.  We pray for you to guide us to the person who can help us.  We ask this in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer to Locate a Counselor for the First Time

God, I’m praying to you because I think I need to go see a counselor.  I’ve never been to one, or even thought I needed one, but now I do.  There’s a lot of things going on in my life that are not making sense and I feel like I’ve got this heavy blanket on my thoughts and emotions.

I can’t seem to pinpoint the cause of this feeling or when or how it started.  I just know that I’m not myself and I want to be better.  I want to think and feel better.  I’m praying to you, asking for your direction to guide me to a counselor who can help me.  I want to be able to trust them and hear you through them.

I know ultimately you are my Guide and my Counselor.  I also know you speak through other people.  Help me Lord, in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer to Find a Therapist for a Child

Dear God in heaven, I need to find a therapist for my son.  I can’t seem to communicate with him and he has been acting differently in the last few months.  I don’t know what to do.  I need help so I’m praying to you for that help.

Can you guide me to a competent, trained therapist who specializes in children?  I want to find someone who understands children and can help my son?  I confess I’m afraid of what I may discover because my mind comes up with all these negative scenarios for my son’s behavior now.  That’s why I need a professional therapist.

Please help me find a good one that’s nearby.  I pray this in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer to Find a Counselor for a Teen

Dear Lord, I come to you in prayer for my teenage daughter.  She has become withdrawn and moody and her behavior has become a night and day deal.  I know teenagers go through phases and so forth, but this is something different, I can just feel it in my heart.

I need to locate a counselor who can talk with my daughter, and listen to her.  My daughter is not talking to me, other than one-word answers or a grunt.  I wish she’d open up to me, but I can understand if she won’t.  I am hoping that someone objective may be of help.

Can you help me find a good counselor for my daughter?  I just want her to be okay and to have some way to let out whatever is causing this change in her.  I make this prayer through Jesus Christ my Savior, Amen.

Prayer to Find a Therapist for a Friend

Lord, I don’t know what to do for my friend (friend’s name).  She keeps telling me she’s fine, but I can see she is not.  I asked her if she had someone to talk to, like a counselor, but she said no.  She did say, “Maybe you can find one for me.”

Help me find a therapist for my friend.  I want to help her but not pressure her.  I pray this in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer to Find a Therapist to Deal With Anxiety

Lord Jesus, I am anxious all the time.  I need help.  I don’t want my anxiety to keep having so much control over my life and my actions.  I need help.  I need help from a professional because it’s clear to me that I can’t handle this myself.

Please guide me, help me, find a good therapist who can tell me what is happening and why.  I want to be more at peace each day.  I pray this prayer in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer to Find a Counselor to Deal With Depression

Dear God, my husband is depressed.  I know I’m not a trained professional but even I can see he’s not the same as he once was.  His sleep patterns have changed dramatically.  His eating has lessened.  Activities he once enjoyed and looked forward to don’t have any appeal to him anymore.

This isn’t just a “down time.”  He told me he doesn’t feel like himself, but he also didn’t seem to care.  I need to find a professional, licensed counselor to help him.  I know he’d go if I asked him, but I don’t know where to start. Please guide me to resources so I can get my husband the help he needs.  I pray this in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer to Find a Therapist for Myself

Dear God, I need a therapist.  I’m not sure exactly why, but I know I need someone.  The past few years have piled up so much emotional, mental, and spiritual baggage that I can’t handle the weight of it much longer.

I want to let go of the burdens I seem to be carrying around.  I want to know what it is to have good mental health. So, I’m praying to you to help me find a good counselor.  I want to grow and develop and be free of this junk.  I pray this in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Final Thoughts

If you, or someone you know, is in need of a therapist or a counselor, it may seem overwhelming to even know where to start.  The good news is that there are resources available to help you find a licensed counselor in your area.  You want a professional! Especially if you’re dealing with serious issues like abuse– past or present.

When Jesus was teaching his disciples, he reminded them there was much more truth they needed but it would come to them later, through the Holy Spirit.  This reminder serves us as well.  Much truth and guidance may come to you from God through a counselor or a therapist.

“I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. ¹³ But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. ¹⁴ He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. ¹⁵ All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you” John 16.12-15, NIV).

We can always go our own way and be our own advisor, but Scripture repeatedly counsels against this.  There’s just too much we don’t know.  For example,

“The way of fools seems right to them,
    but the wise listen to advice” (Proverbs 12.15, NIV).
