Finances are hard and things can get harder when you bring in two very different people, with different experiences, and different expectations.
It can be difficult to talk about goals and expectations for finances in a marriage but it is important.
Before talking about finances with your spouse it is good to pray to God first. God can help you identify what areas of your finances you are being selfish with, how you can better steward your money, and where you need to be accepting of change.
Finances can bring up high emotion but it is good to remember that how we handle money is another way we can grow together in marriage, grow closer to God, and grow in serving others.
Sometimes our finances or talking about our finances makes us face trials. We have to remember that even in these tough situations and conversations God can use these to help us grow in our faith.
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. (James 1:2-4 ESV)
It’s also hard to handle finances within a marriage because we often forget that it’s God who provides. We begin to think that we are in control and can provide for ourselves. So when finances are tight we may feel insufficient. It’s a great reminder that God provides.
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19 ESV)

Short Prayer For Marriage Finances
God, you are mighty and powerful. You have a great plan that you have invited me to be part of. I love that you provide all I need.
I know you will also provide for my physical needs but the stress of finances in my marriage is hard right now.
My spouse and I are not always on the same page. We often disagree on what is best. Please help us to have the same heart for our finances. Give us a heart that is like yours.
Father, I pray that you help us figure out a better way of spending. I pray for a miracle to help with the money that is coming in. I pray that in a mighty way, you show yourself to me. I need you, Lord. Amen.
Prayers For Good Communication About Marriage Finances
Mighty God, you are the creator of all. You created me, everything you have created is a gift from you and I want to be able to use it to honor you. I do not always honor you when I try to communicate about finances with my spouse.
Father, I pray that you help me use my words to honor you.
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. (Psalm 19:14 ESV)
God, I want to be able to communicate clearly. I want to get my point across in love, not in a selfish way. Help me to remove all pride from my lips and to communicate out of humility.
Father, it is so difficult talking about finances with my spouse. I need you to go before me and soften the heart of my spouse and be with me when I speak to give me clear words.
Lord, please help me to communicate well with my spouse about our finances. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Prayers For Couples Fighting About Money
Dear Heavenly Father, You alone are God. You have created marriage as an institute that can honor you and represent to the world what steadfast love and commitment are. However, my marriage right now is struggling.
Father, it seems like my spouse and I are always fighting about money. We rarely seem to have the same desires for how to spend money and making enough money always seems like a problem.
Even as I say these words, Lord, I know this is not a matter of money but a matter of my heart. I am discontent with the things you have given me. My spouse seems to want more and more. Will you please help us both to be content?
Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5 ESV).
Father, forgive us for not being content. Help us to grow in this area. Help us to grow in our communication. Help us to encourage one another. Please just help. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Prayers For Financial Breakthrough In A Marriage
Dear Heavenly Father, you are so patient with us. You waited patiently for me to come to you. You waited as I rejected you for so many years. You waited for me to humble myself and see there is a need for a savior. You are so patient.
Father, We have tried to be patient with our finances. We have tried to honor you in how we have spent our money. We have slowly been paying off debt and it seems to be forever before we can be debt-free.
the borrower is the slave of the lender. (Proverbs 22:7 ESV)
I am tired of being a slave to this debt. I’m praying for a financial breakthrough. I pray that my spouse and I can work together to get out of this debt.
Father, I know that ultimately I have been set free from the power of sin in my life. I have tasted and seen this freedom and I long for financial freedom as well.
Father, I ask for this not so that I can build wealth after I am out of debt. I don’t desire to be rich. I do desire to be free to serve and love others in a way that a lack of income has restricted me.
God, I ask that you bring this financial breakthrough. Give me patience as I wait for you to bring it.
Prayers To Let Go Of Financial Dreams
Dear Heavenly Father, you have given me new life! You are so good to me. When I was my old creation I dreamed of being rich. I dreamed of having wealth for my own glory.
Now that I am a new creation I oftentimes still have these selfish financial desires. Please forgive me for this selfishness. This change of dream does not just affect me but my spouse.
God, I pray that you help my spouse and me to let go of this dream together. Help us both to see that your way for us is better than any financial dream we have.
Father, I ask that you help us to manage our money in a way that honors you even when it doesn’t make sense.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. (Proverbs 3:5 ESV)
Help us to trust in you in all ways, including our finances. Help us to no longer dream of financial gain for ourselves but dream of what we can do with the money you provide for us. Father, I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Closing Thoughts
Finances in a marriage can be a very tricky topic. Our human nature is prideful and we place high regard on money and the efforts put towards gaining money.
There are major differences between how a Christian spends their money and how the world does. Jesus speaks of money often because it affects us as humans and reveals what we trust.
God wants us to trust in Christ alone, not money.
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs. (1 Timothy 6:10 ESV)
How we see and relate to our finances gets even trickier as we manage it within marriage. It is important that you continue to come to the Lord in prayer, communicate with your spouse, and trust in the Lord to provide for you.
