“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29.11, NIV).

As the prophet Jeremiah was sharing God’s words with his people, those words also extend to people like you and me. God has plans for you, including what you will do, and who you will be, in retirement. Praying about when you will retire, or how you will retire can help you make sense of it all.

A Short Prayer For Retirement

Dear God, I am headed to retirement and I have mixed emotions about it. Part of me is happy to not have to work anymore on someone else’s schedule. But another part of me is afraid. What will I do? What is my purpose going to be? I ask You to help me have insight so I can embrace this part of my life and not be afraid. I ask this in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer For Early Retirement

Lord God, I am so glad that I decided to take early retirement from my job. Ever since I made the choice and set things in motion, I have felt more free and less stressed.

It is by Your gracious hand that I have had a fulfilling career and am able to make this decision. I am not being forced out by company finances or any other reason. I am going out on my own will, in my timing. Thank You for showing me the way on this.

A year ago I wouldn’t have considered this, but the circumstances all fell into place and it was actually a pretty easy decision. That can only be because of your clear guidance and peace surrounding me. Thank you Lord, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Prayer About Whether To Retire Or Not

Lord, I don’t know what to do. I feel like I am stuck and don’t have any way to get unstuck. I will soon qualify for retirement, but I’m not sure I want to, or need to. It’s as if because the date is looming, I feel like I have to make a decision, but maybe I don’t.

Clearly, I have some confusion, which is why I’m coming to You in prayer. You have always guided me throughout my life and this is one more time where I need to know what direction to turn. Just because I can retired doesn’t necessarily mean I have to retire, does it, Lord?

I’m going to talk it over with my spouse and with the HR people at work, so I pray that You speak to me through them. I need real clarity here. I want to be able to make a decision either way and know that I am living in Your peace about it.

I know I can work more, as my health is fine. Or, is it time for something else? Please guide me, Lord. In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

Prayer For Retirement From Teaching

I so love my job, Lord, and for that I give You all the gratitude! Year after year, I have had the privilege to help young people learn and watch them grow. The demanding part of being a teacher is part of why I love doing it–there’s always something to challenge me.

I also am now aware that I have put in enough time to be able to retire with full benefits and pension. Over the last few years, I had been sort of aware of this, but it’s now a reality. I feel like it’s time, but I want to be able to make that decision clearly.

Help me gather all the information I need so I can make an informed choice and pick the right timing for this. It is a blessing to know that even though I will leave this job, You are still providing for me in retirement.

I can’t even think about what I’ll do once I’m not working. Right now, I just pray to be able to make this decision. I pray this in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Even when I am old and gray,
do not forsake me, my God,
till I declare your power to the next generation,
your mighty acts to all who are to come” ( Psalm 71.18, NIV).

Prayer For Retirement From Law Enforcement

Father God, I am thankful to be alive and in decent health. I know of quite a few other law enforcement officers who have died on the job, may they rest in peace, or whose health is terrible.

What I do can be dangerous, and I know it has higher stress than some other jobs. But, I’ve always enjoyed the work because I felt like I was doing something positive. I was helping people outright, or by arresting them, helping have the chance to choose a different path.

My HR people have informed me that I will be eligible for full retirement next year. It seems so far off, but I know it’s really not. I just don’t know if I want to. I think it’s good timing, what with other things going on in my family, but I’d like some clarity, Lord.

Will you help guide me as I make this decision? You’ve given me a great life through this job, and for that, I am very thankful. Hear my prayer through Jesus, Amen.

Prayer For Retirement Financial Planning

God, I have to make some decisions about retirement, especially my finances, but I do not have all the information I need.

I pray for you to guide me to a good financial advisor who I can trust. There’s some seminars at work and so forth, which are helpful, but I need someone I can ask questions of and get good answers.

I am very grateful that You have provided for me through the company’s pension plan, so I know there’s a good amount of money there. I just need to know how to deal with payouts, annuities, and how to navigate the health care part of it all.

I need wisdom, guidance, and some good common sense on this retirement planning, Lord. I trust that You will direct my steps to the right person. I pray all of this in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer For Retirement Transition

Dear Lord, I have been working, to some degree, for most of my life. Now I’m heading to the retirement season of my life and I pray for this to be a smooth transition.

I look forward to the retirement parties at work and with friends, as much as I look forward to the projects I’ll work on after I leave my job. I just pray there are no major hiccups along the way. I want to enjoy leaving work and entering retirement.

I don’t have negative thoughts about retirement like some people I know–I am enthusiastic about it. I know You will still guide me in my purpose for whatever I’m doing. Thank You for the life You’ve given me so far, and I look forward to what You have for me as I retire.

I pray all of this in the name of my Savior, Jesus Christ, Amen.

Concluding Thoughts

I had an older friend tell me one time, “Retirement is what you make of it.” I’m not at that point of life yet, but I think he’s right, about retirement, or any part of life.

You have choices and decisions about how you will feel about the circumstances you face. Your feelings and emotions are under your control. So, you can feel good about retirement if you want to; you can decide to feel bad about retirement if you want to.

I’d encourage you to choose on the positive side! All the other milestones of life happened fairly close together back when you were younger. Becoming a teenager, getting a driver’s license, turning 21, getting your first job. All of that was crammed into about ten years or less.

But you’ve been working for a few decades and now face another milestone: retirement. Take this challenge to God and let Him give you the peace and clarity you seek.

You can also take advantage of resources that can help you prepare for retirement. Take your time and find a good advisor, or use the people at your place of employment.

“And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns” ( Philippians 1.6, NLT).

I hope these prayers prove helpful to you. I also hope you grow closer to God as you continue to pray, about anything in your life.
