5 Prayers for Husbands Addicted to Substances

Marriage is a beautiful promise full of love and hope for the future, but it can also come with struggles that cannot be foreseen. Temptations surround us in our everyday life, and it does not take much for those temptations to become addictions.

In 1 Corinthians 10:13-14 the Bible teaches us that “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”

I have faith that everything put on our paths was specifically made to teach us something. The hardest parts of my life came before I was saved, and I hope that your husband is on that same path towards salvation and deeper love with God.

I pray that you have a community to help you through this time. Know that many of these communities are online via Zoom or other video chat tools and while you might be hesitant to try something online these can still be very effective.

I also want you to know that you are not alone, God is with you and working to fight the evil that is consuming your spouse. I also want you to know that there are support groups for those whose families are living with a person struggling with addiction. They have resources that may help you through this very difficult time and set you up for better months ahead.

Prayer for Husband Addicted to Smoking Cigarettes

Heavenly Father, I come to you today to ask you to intercede on my husband’s life. Lord, I am not sure if he can see his dependence on cigarettes, but we both know that it is there. Father I ask that you take his need for nicotine away.

Lord, I ask that you help my husband see his addiction as a problem he needs help with. Father, I ask that you give me the words I need to guide him towards asking you for assistance. Lord, we try to walk with you the best we can, but this is something I cannot help him with. Please help him look towards you for a new path, Lord.

Father, help my husband work through what is causing his need for this addiction. Help him see what the deeper root is, Lord, help him give up fighting this battle alone and instead allow him the strength to hand it over to you.

Lord, I ask that you give him the strength and endurance he needs to go through withdrawal. I ask that you surround him with your love, Lord. I ask that everyone around him shows him nothing but support on this journey. Lord, save my husband from this evil that is killing him. Grant us  a new life without addiction. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Prayer for Husband Addicted to Smoking Weed

Dear Lord, I come to you today because I have realized that the smoking my husband has been doing is no longer a recreational activity. Father, he is smoking weed and heavily depending on it. Father, I am worried he needs weed in order to regulate his emotions, and that he is not dealing with the issues that are bothering him head on.

Lord, I ask that you help my husband. I ask that you open his eyes to see how often he is smoking weed. I ask that you guide him to realize this is not the way to help him feel better. Father, I ask that you surround him with people that can help him. Help him see you are what he needs more than this drug that has consumed him, Lord.

Father, I ask that you give me the strength to help my husband. I ask that you give him an open heart to hear and see what I am seeing and saying. Lord, please help him take my concerns seriously.

Lord, I ask that you take away everyone in his life who is encouraging him to smoke weed. I ask that you banish the evil and temptation living in his life. I ask that you save my husband and our family from this life of addiction, Father. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Prayer for Husband Addicted to Prescription Drugs

Father, I am scared. I have noticed that my husband is using his prescription drugs more than what is recommended. I have seen that we are past the point of normal usage and I have been avoiding the true issue. Lord, I do not know what I can do. I do not know how to confront this person who is slowly taking over the body of my husband.

Lord, I ask that you open my husband’s eyes. I ask that you show him that what he is doing is not actually helping his situation. Father, help him see that this is not helping him feel better. Help him see that he is becoming more and more dependent on his prescription drugs; instead of getting better.

Father, I ask that you heal the pain my husband is in. I ask that you relieve the pain he is trying to escape from by taking these prescription drugs. Allow him the ability to not feel the pain that creates his need for the drugs. Father save him from this path he is going down.

Lord, I ask that you help us lean on you alone. Help my prayers fill his heart with hope in getting through this addiction. Father surround my husband with your love and give him the ability to walk away from this dark path of prescription drugs. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Prayer for Husband Addicted to Illegal Drugs

Father, I have found the cause of my husband’s change in behavior. I am frightened, Lord, and I need your help.

Lord, I am here to ask you to protect and save my husband. Father, our family is in danger. This addiction is not only dangerous for him, Father, but it is dangerous for our family and I am begging you to make it stop.

Lord, I ask that my husband loses contact with anyone who is supplying him with these drugs. I ask that his dealers forget about him and that their drug supply runs dry. Lord, I ask that you make these substances disappear from our life. I ask that you send away all temptations and force my husband to go into withdrawal.

Father, I ask that my husband can see what these drugs are doing to him and our family. I ask that you open his eyes and give him the strength to walk away from these illegal drugs. Lord, help my husband see that you are here for him, walking with him through his specific struggles. Help him want to be sober, Lord. We both know that your love and his acceptance are the only ways he will get through this.

Lord, help me be a figure of strength for him. Help me be compassionate and forgiving just like you. Father, I ask that you give me the words and the scripture my husband needs to recover from his addiction. Use me to fight the evil inside of him, Father. Help me bring back the man that was here before this addiction took control. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Prayer for Husband Addicted to Alcohol

Father, my husband has been consumed by addiction. His having a good time tendency has grown into a habit. Lord, I know this is not your way. I know that my husband’s addiction is an evil that we have to break. Lord, I am asking for you to free him of this demon.

Father, I ask that you open my husband’s eyes. I ask that the next time he turns to alcohol you meet him with an awakening. Lord, show him that this is not the way. Show him that he is in trouble and needs help. Lord, I do not want to lose him to this battle, help me show him what his addiction is doing to our family.

Lord, I ask that you remove the temptation that my husband is surrounded by. Please remove the individuals who encourage this behavior from his life. Lord, instead bring people into his life that can help him overcome his addiction. Lord, give him a support system that understands what he is going through. Give him people who he can lean on when he thinks alcohol is the answer to his problems.

Father, I ask that you give me the tools to support my husband through recovery. Give me grace and thick skin, as I know this is not going to be easy for him. Lord, help me be there for my husband for better or for worse. Fill me with your love to give him, Lord. Surround our whole family with love during this process. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Closing Thoughts

The emotional ache that addiction causes a person and their family is heartbreaking. When you have a husband facing addition it can impact all areas of life: from finding stable work to maintaining the marriage and everything in between.

The only things you can do is to try and be supportive of recovery and to rely heavily on God.

James 4:7 teaches us to “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” It is hard for people consumed by addiction to see that resisting temptation, getting clean, and getting right with our Lord is the only way to find peace.

Do not feel discouraged, your prayers are being heard, and God is fighting for your husband. Remember to lean on God and to be understanding of the course he is sending you down.

  8. Please pray for my husband, Andrew, who has been smoking weed for almost 30 years now. I met him and we started dating around 16 years ago, so I have been witness to this addiction for almost half the amount of years he has been smoking. I feel it is gradually affecting him worse and worse. Last year, he almost entered a state of psychosis but our doctor managed to nip the symptoms and strange behaviours just in time. Please join me in praying for God to open his eyes to the truth (bring him out of denial) and to be able to clearly see the negative consequences of his addiction for our marriage and for our daughters? I need God to intervene and bring about a miraculous break through, after many years of praying for him only…now I am asking God to intervene on pur behalf (his family).
