Growing up, faith was something we expressed at Church on Sunday and before meals. Although I’m sad I didn’t grow up with a better understanding of prayer, I’m grateful my parents instilled in me the importance of praying before meals. It is a great habit to pray for breakfast.

We know it is important to pray before we eat because Jesus does it! At the last supper the Bible says, “And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He said, “Take this and share it among yourselves;” (Luke 22:17, NASB).

Although we don’t always acknowledge it, eating breakfast every morning is a privilege. Jesus recognized this and wanted to instill this habit into his apostles. It is a gift from God that we are able to nourish our bodies with food. Although our faith is the ultimate nourishment, it is important to thank God before consuming our physical nourishment!

Lord, thank you for this breakfast meal. Whether it’s simple or a large spread, I am grateful for the gift of food that you are providing me with.  I ask that You bless this food to nourish my body so that I can go out and glorify you. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

God, thank you for this breakfast. I ask that you bless those who prepared this meal. I know it is not easy to prepare food in the midst of all the busyness. It can be hard to have motivation and so I’m grateful for those who thoughtfully prepared this meal.

I offer this breakfast in a special way for the poor and hungry. You were no stranger to the poor. I’m very privileged to be able to have breakfast every day. I never have to not worry about where my next meal will come from. Not everyone has this privilege.

Please be with the poor and hungry and provide for their needs. Help them to find the food that they need to sustain themselves. Please help me to be more generous with my time and resources so that I can help those who have no food. Please give me the wisdom to know how I can best do this

May all those who are hungry for food know that their hunger will never cease until they rest in You. As I sit and eat my breakfast, I thank you for this reminder. Thank you for this delicious meal, but it means nothing if I don’t have You. I will only be completely satisfied with you. Help us all to remember this and to keep you as the center of our day. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Breakfast Prayer When Someone Is Missed At The Table

Lord, thank You for this breakfast. Even though it is delicious and a beautiful spread, we acknowledge that we’re missing someone at the table who is deeply loved.

Lord, please heal our hearts. We miss (name).

(If your loved one is estranged or just couldn’t make it) Please help us to mend that relationship so that way he or she will join us at the table again soon.

(If your loved one has died) We miss (Name) dearly. (He/She) is dearly departed. We pray that they are rejoicing with you in Heaven. Even though we have that comfort, it’s still hard for us to see a missing place at the table .

Thank you for the atmosphere so that we can have an enjoyable time. It can’t be easy to own or to work at a restaurant when people aren’t always considerate. Please bless the wait staff with tips. Help them to have patience and joy today. Give them an opportunity to talk about You and your goodness.

Concluding Thoughts

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It provides an opportunity for us to give thanks to God at the beginning of the day. By starting our day with a grateful heart and a heart full of praise to God we are setting ourselves up for success during the moments when we might more easily fall into sin.

Although we usually take it for granted, having a meal is a privilege. Enjoy your breakfast! However, no matter if it’s big or small, make sure to take time to praise God and ask Him for the strength to use the food that you’re eating to glorify him throughout the day.
