6 Hopeful Prayers For Insomnia

It’s around 4 a.m. as I write this, so I think I can help you with prayers for your insomnia.

If you’re reading this then you are having problems with not being able to go to sleep or stay asleep.  I, like you, am among the one in three adults who suffer from insomnia symptoms in some form.

While I don’t have any trouble falling asleep–I usually conk out within minutes of going to bed–I often wake up in the middle of the night.  Sometimes I can get back to sleep, but more often than not, once I am awakened, it takes two to three hours before I can doze back off again.

I have tried all the usual remedies and solutions.  Have the sleep environment cold, quiet, and dark.  Don’t have caffeine late in the day. Stay on a regular schedule of going to bed and waking up.  Check for sleep apnea. Use melatonin.  Or try sleep medications.

Some of these solutions have helped improve my sleep, but I still have insomnia. The difference maker for me has been to pray about it. Not so much to cure insomnia, but to give me peace about it so I don’t worry and get anxious about it anymore.

I get the sleep I get, and what sleep I do get is deep and restful. I may not get the full seven to eight hours of sleep a night that is recommended, but I’ve stopped focusing on it.

In peace I will lie down and sleep,
    for you alone, Lord,
make me dwell in safety” (Psalm 4.8, NIV).

These six hopeful prayers for insomnia might prove helpful to you as well. If you are suffering from an extended bout of not sleeping, then you should definitely go to your physician and get checked out and discuss this with them.

The prayers here are for you to share your worry and concerns with God. To give voice to what you’re facing. For prayers for other health issues, like back pain, headaches, or breast cancer, you can explore this website as well as other topics.

Use these six hopeful prayers as you need. You can modify them as needed to suit your specific circumstance. But do pray. Let the God of all creation hear you and minister to you through the Holy Spirit. And may you truly find peace as you pray.

Short Prayer For Insomnia

Dear God, I am struggling with insomnia and I don’t know what to do about it. The more I think about not getting enough sleep, the more anxious I feel, which then makes it harder for me to get to sleep. I just know I need rest. I’m praying to you for help with this insomnia. Please help me get the sleep I need so I can do what I need to do each day.  In the name of Jesus, I pray, Amen.

Prayer To Fall Asleep Easily

Dear Lord God, I can’t seem to get to sleep each night.  I toss and turn and can’t get comfortable in my bed.  Each time I look at the clock, it’s like another hour has passed and I’m curled up in the bed, still not sleeping.  Still worrying that I won’t be able to do my work the next day.

My thoughts keep racing and my brain won’t turn off.  There are so many things I didn’t get done today and they’re just going to pile up on top of the things I have to do tomorrow.  I’m desperately seeking sleep.

I’ve tried the warm milk and that just gave me really bad morning breath, but not better sleep.  White noise apps just kept me awake even worse.  All the little tricks I’ve read about, or people have told me about, haven’t magically helped me get to sleep at night.

I’m praying to you because I don’t know what else to do.  I can’t keep going like this.  There’s no way this is good for my overall health and well-being.  Lord, please help me find some way to be able to get to sleep quickly when I go to bed each night.  I ask this in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer To Stay Asleep Through the Night

Well, God, it’s 2 a.m. and here I am again, asking you why I can’t get a good night’s sleep.  I don’t understand why I can be asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow but I wake up for no apparent reason about 4-5 hours later.

And once I’m awake, I’m awake.  I wish I had 10 hours a night to get seven or eight hours of sleep, but I don’t.  I have to get up and get ready for work in about four hours so I’m sitting here in bed wondering how I’m going to function on four hours of sleep.

I just want to go to sleep and wake up seven hours or so later, refreshed and ready for the day. Instead, it’s the middle of the night and I’m wide awake with nothing to do except talk to you about why I’m not asleep and dreaming.

This is so frustrating and annoying, Lord.  Other people I know get all the sleep they need and seem so happy and better rested and full of life.  I go about my day, dragging and in a grumpy mood because I’m so tired.  This insomnia is driving me nuts.  I hate not being able to get the sleep I need.

Please help me to sleep, God.  I beg you, in the name of Jesus, help me to sleep.  Amen.

Prayer About Sleep Medications

Father God, my doctor has told me that I likely need to take some type of sleep medication in order to deal with insomnia I have been struggling with for some time.  He’s ruled out me having sleep apnea, so using some type of drug is likely the best option.

I’m not really into taking drugs for stuff, but I can’t keep going with the way things are.  I need to get some deep, renewing sleep each night.  My doctor suggested starting with some over-the-counter medications like melatonin or diphenhydramine and seeing how those work in the short term.

Otherwise, he said I’d need to consider prescription drugs.  There are so many and each has its own side effects.  I wish I could just close my eyes each night and get all the sleep I need to, like I did when I was younger.  Apparently, that’s not possible anymore.

I don’t know what to do Lord, so I’m asking you for guidance and direction.  Somehow, I need a solution to my lack of sleep.  Help me to choose a good option with these medications.  I pray this in the name of Jesus, my Peace, Amen.

Prayer For Insomnia Diagnosis

Dear God, I guess I should be thankful that I have an official diagnosis from my doctor on why I am not getting the sleep I need.  After several tests, she told me I have chronic insomnia.

I thought I was just having a rough patch and the stress was making me not get to sleep.  But I seem to have lost track of time and ignored things for way too long.  I have insomnia and I have to deal with it.  I’m going to a sleep lab so they can get a really good look at my sleep and my sleep patterns.

Hopefully, now that I have been properly diagnosed, I can have some sort of solution and I can get the sleep I desperately want.  I’m so jealous of my friends who just zonk out in minutes and wake up 8-9 hours later all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.  I’d like that, Lord, I really would.

Please help me to deal with all of this and finally get some rest.  In the name of Jesus, I pray, Amen.

Prayer For a Good Night’s Sleep

Lord, I just want a good night’s sleep!  Last night it was the neighbor’s dog barking at something in the wee hours of the morning.  The night before the thunder and lightning kept me up.  A couple of nights before that, my husband’s snoring wouldn’t let me get to sleep for hours.

I can’t keep going like this.  I need to get to sleep and stay asleep.  I can’t remember the last time I had a full night’s rest, without interruption or disturbance.  I think I might be developing insomnia!

Whatever it is that I’m dealing with, I know that I am tired of waking up tired and groggy.  I’m tired of not having enough energy during the day and nodding off in the afternoon.  I need sleep, Lord.  Please help me in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Final Thoughts

When we don’t get the sleep we need, we feel it, especially as we age.  We might have been able to pull all-nighters when we were young and not feel the effects, but every year we get older, the more we can feel the impact of not getting enough sleep.

I don’t know of anyone who says, “I really enjoy having insomnia!”  Regardless of who we are, we know that we feel better when we get enough sleep.  And we also know how we feel when we don’t get enough sleep.  Our wish is the same as the Psalmist:

When you lie down, you will not be afraid;
when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet” (Proverbs 3.24, NIV).

When our sleep is not sweet, we know it.  We feel it.  Other people can see it.  Our hope is that these prayers for insomnia are of help to you.  Not so much to cure your insomnia, but to help you deal with it.  To help you place the struggle in the hands of your Savior and Redeemer.

And, as you pray, may the peace of God surround you, and may God give you rest.

  1. Hi John
It is 4 am here too and your article on insomnia is 100% identical to my problem.
I too have tried all the “strategies” recommended by the “experts” but like you nothing works. I pray for many hours per day giving thanks and praise and glory to God – but He seems far far away at night and often the “opposite” happens to my prayers. It is good to share with other one in three insomniacs (I am from New Zealand but now living in Philippines)common sleep problems.
