Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9 ESV)
In Scripture, we see the command “do not fear” so often that we must take notice. Actually, it is one of the most frequent commands in Scripture. God knows we constantly need this reminder.
In our fallen world, there are many things to fear. It seems like every time we turn around we encounter things that only disrupt our lives but leave us afraid.
For me, fear stems from the unknown. I don’t know what is hiding behind the shadows. I don’t know if my kids are listening. I don’t know if the driver in front of me is safe to drive. I don’t know if the pain I feel is normal. I don’t know if I will receive my next paycheck. The unknown causes me to fear.
However, I am so thankful for the Holy Spirit who draws me back to the truth. The truth is that God is all-knowing, all-powerful, and He loves me. When I don’t know I can trust God does know, He has the power to arrange it how He pleases, and He loves me.
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28 ESV)
The following prayers against fear will be filled with truth from scripture. Often times we need to be reminded of the truth when our minds are filled with unknown emotions. It’s God’s truth that grounds us.
As we get closer to God, we will begin to trust in Him more and be afraid less. It is His word that guides us when we are afraid.
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (Psalm 119:105 ESV)
Not only does God’s word guides us but as Christians we are promised that God is with us. We do not have to worry because God is protecting us even when we go through dark times.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. (Psalm 23:4 ESV)
However, if you have not been made right before God by repenting of your sins and believing Christ is Lord then these promises of God are not for you. Your name is not in the Book of Life.
You should have great fear of the God that will judge you on the day of judgment. Revelation 20 speaks about that day of judgement.
And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:15 ESV)
If you are not a Christian or if you do not know if you are in right standing before God, there is great news! God has made it clear how you can be made right and be judged as “not guilty”. It has nothing to do with your good works but has everything to do with Christ.
Jesus was sent to this earth to die for your sins. Anyone who believes that Jesus is Lord will be saved. When you truly believe God will justify you and you will have a desire to live your life for Him. It won’t always look perfect because God is still making you like Christ, but you will be different you will be born again.
If you have struggled with fear and have for the first time accepted Christ you will immediately begin to enjoy the blessings of being a child of God. He will take away those fears as you begin to trust in Him.
If today you have turned to Christ I want to encourage you to share that with someone in your home church so you can continue to grow in this relationship with Jesus. Do not try and do this alone, God created us for community.
I hope that these prayers guide you to the light of God and help you step out of fear and into trusting in Him in new and great ways. We would love to pray with you during this time. Please comment below so we can join with you in prayer.
Short Prayer Against Fear
Dear Heavenly Father, please help me to not be afraid. In this world, there are so many unknowns that cause me to fear. Help me to trust in you and your word during these times. Lord, I ask that you help me to take your truths and bury them deep inside my heart so that in the moments when I am afraid I can recall your truth.
Father, I ask that you would not just help me to know these truths on an intellectual level but allow them to affect my thoughts and my emotions. Allow them to work in my life so that the fear will disappear.
Lord, help me to trust in you more fully. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Prayer Against Fear Of The Unknown Future
Sovereign God, I am afraid of the unknown. I know that you know everything and it is all in your control. Help me to trust in this fact about you.
For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. (2 Timothy 1:7 ESV)
God, I pray that I feel your spirit today when I am afraid of the unknown. Help me to live with the power of love and self-control. Do not allow me to continue to dwell on the unknown but on your truths. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Prayer Against Fear When Alone
God, I praise you that you are always with me. You never leave me. Sometimes on this earth, I feel so alone. Even though I am surrounded by people I feel alone and this makes me feel afraid.
I sometimes feel foolish for feeling this way because I know you are with me but then I’m reminded that you care for me and will take care of me through this.
Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. (1 Peter 5:7 ESV)
Help me to continue to always come to you with I’m afraid and feel alone. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Prayer Against Fear Of Death
God…I’m afraid to die. I’m not sure what it looks like after death and I’m afraid of the pain of death.
Help me to turn to your truth as I seek you through this fear.
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23 ESV)
God, your word is clear that I deserve death because I have sinned against you. Forgive me of this sin. Set me free of this fear and help me to accept the free gift you have offered because of Christ.
Thank you for this amazing gift. When I am tempted to fear death will you please help me to remember this promise I have in you? In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Prayer Against Fear About Current Events
God, this life is so messed up. You created this world and the sin has made it a living nightmare. You see it all, I know you do. It scares me. I’m afraid to go out of my own door.
And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. (Matthew 10:28 ESV)
God, when I’m tempted to fear everything going on in this world, will you help me to remember that they can not take what I have in you? They may be able to take my body, but they can never take my salvation. Help me to think deeply about this truth and allow the fear to have no place in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Prayer Against Fear Of Losing Everything
God, I have so much fear about losing my house, my family, my possessions, everything. Help me to know your truth so I do not have to fear.
“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. (Matthew 6:24 ESV)
God, I recognize that my fear of losing everything is really an issue of my heart as I have begun to value these things more than you. Help me to know how to serve you alone as God and not depend on things to make me happy or allow me to feel comfortable. I want to find my joy in you alone. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Closing Thoughts
Fear can be really scary and something we all deal with at one time or another. Some will deal with fear more intensely than others. Some will deal with it for longer periods. But God wants to help.
He commands us to not fear and He can do this because in exchange for fear, we can trust in Him. He wants to take care of all our needs and wants to settle all our fears.
The enemy wants to come and keep us in fear. But God wants to deliver us from that. The evil one wants us to cling to fear and makes us think we are in control when we do. But God is asking us to let go and trust Him.
