Dear Friend, I am so sorry that you are walking through this season of a broken marriage. It can be a lonely and sad place to be, but I’m glad that you have chosen to seek God during this time. I hope that these prayers will help guide you as you seek His comfort.
God is the one who loves you more than anyone, desires your marriage to thrive, and has the power to save it. Prayer is a great place to start when you realize your marriage is broken.
Maybe this broken marriage has caught you off guard, but often times it seems to be a slow process of hurt and drifting apart that causes it to seem like it’s now broken.
Now you are here, broke and confused. You are not exactly sure what the next steps are, how to put your marriage back together, or if it can.
I know that if you are here, seeking prayer, you know our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. You may know Christ’s teaching on divorce and that is why you seek His power to fix your broken marriage. (If you do not know Jesus’ teachings on divorce you can read it here(Matthew 5:23; 1 Corinthians 7:15).
“What God has joined together, let not man separate” (Mark 10:9)
Even though your marriage seems to be broken God truly does want you to continue to be committed to your spouse. It is out of God’s love that He desires your marriage to be put back together.
Marriage is a beautiful thing that God created and designed for our good. But when it’s broken it can feel like it is not a good thing. You are going to have to work with God to put your broken marriage back together. It begins with us understanding what God desires and what He does not desire.
Praying is a beautiful place to start. God wants to hear from you, but He also wants to speak to you. He speaks to us through the Bible, His word. As you are going through this season of a broken marriage be committed to being in God’s word and going to church where other, wiser Christians can come alongside you in this season of your life.
I want to pray alongside you that God will save your marriage. You also must fight, every day, for your marriage. Trust God. He has given you everything you need to be faithful. I’m hopeful that these prayers will lead you to God’s truth and give you encouragement in this battle against divorce. Please leave prayer requests in the comments so we can pray with you!
Great pain comes with broken marriages. It’s not God’s plan for marriages to suffer but so often in this broken world, our marriages experience seasons of brokenness.
Short Prayer For A Broken Marriage
To you God, I lift up my request. It is in you I trust. I pray that you rescue my broken marriage. Do not let the enemy win this battle. I know that no one who waits for you will be put to shame, so I wait on you to save my marriage.
Lord, teach me your ways. Help me to see if there is anything in me that has caused my marriage to get to this point. Forgive me for the selfishness that is in my marriage.
God, please lead me on your path. Help me to know you and your word. Ground me in your truth.
I plead with you for mercy and your steadfast love to cover my marriage and save it from divorce. I pray this in the power of Jesus’s name, Amen.
Prayers For Healing A Broken Marriage
Praise you, God, it is good to sing of your praise, even in the midst of hurt. You have given me so many spiritual blessings. You are great and powerful and you understand the healing my marriage needs.
I pray now that you heal my broken heart and heal my marriage.
He heals the brokenhearted and bind up their wounds (Psalm 147:3 ESV)
My marriage is broken because we are simply two fallen, sinful individuals. But you are greater than all our mistakes, hurts, and burdens. I pray that You help us to fix our eyes on You and heal us.
God, you are the one that has the power to heal my broken marriage. Throughout history, you have healed what was broken. You have cared for those you have loved. I ask you now to show that same power to heal my marriage.
And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people. (Matthew 4:23 ESV)
God, I thank you that you had a clear vision of what you came to this earth to do. You came to share the Gospel and to save people. You healed so that those who would hear the Gospel would believe.
God, I’m asking you now to heal my marriage, not just for my own personal enjoyment but for your glory. I want to be used by you for others to see that you are a true God who still cares about His people.
I plead with you now to heal my marriage. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Prayers For A Failing Marriage
God, even in times of failure you are good. Failure in life, failure in our sin, failure in marriage. But in all of those things, your grace abounds. I ask that in seasons of failure and seasons of pain your grace would not be overlooked.
God, it is also so good to remember that even in our failure you are able to restore. You are the restorer of all things. You take broken sinners and make them new creations and you can take broken marriages and make them new again as well.
So, God may we view the failure in our marriage for what it is. A failure to see you clearly and to live lives that honor you. Lives that are free of sin and that are holy and set apart as you have called us to be. Take our failures and our shortcomings and restore them back to you and back to new.
I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Prayers For A Bad Marriage
Father God, in our pain and trials we must remember that you are good, that you are holy, and that you are worthy of our praise.
At times though that can be hard to remember because we look at our relationships on this earth and they are broken and there appears to be no good in them.
This is especially hard when it comes to our marriages because this is a relationship that is supposed to most resemble our relationship with you and it often is far from it.
God, in your word we learn that our marriage should represent how Christ loves the church. That when we become one body in marriage we should love each other as ourselves.
For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” (Ephesians 5:30-31 ESV)
God, this idea does not always make sense to me, and it is different than the world would say is good. Help me to understand these mysteries in how my marriage reflects Christ and the church.
This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. (Ephesians 5:32-33 ESV)
But when our marriages are struggling and don’t seem good it can be hard to remember to live this out. But you have called us to a high standard and we must seek to live that out.
This can be especially hard when one spouse may not be a believer. But it is in those situations that we must pray for them and show them the type of love and commitment that Christ has shown us.
Father, when our marriages look as if they are so bad that they cannot be saved may we remember what you have done in saving us and that our relationships in marriage are meant to resemble and look like your relationship with us. Give us the grace and strength to carry on and to try and fix those broken relationships.
I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Prayers For A Dead Marriage
God, my marriage is dead. There seems to be nothing left living in it.
My only hope is you. You are in the business of raising to life what was once dead.
You raised Lazarus, your own life, and have even raised me for the deadness of life.
God my marriage is dead. We have both been walking in our own selfish sinful ways. We have been following the devil’s schemes and disobeying your word.
God, we have both sought our own desires, fulfilling physical desires outside of your good. We have failed in our thoughts as we have let them wander away from you and the covenant relationship we made to each other.
But God, you are bigger than this dead marriage. You are rich in mercy and love. Our marriage is dead but you can make it alive.
Help us to turn back to you and away from our sinful lives. Allow our story to be one of redemption and not of brokenness. Save us and our marriage by your grace through faith.
I know we can not bring this marriage back without your help. We surrender this marriage to you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Prayers For Broken Marriage Because Of Disappointments
God, our lives are often marked by times when we feel disappointed. But in those times we must remember that we deserve nothing. We are sinners that have sinned against a holy God and we deserve nothing but Your wrath. But yet in our sin, you show grace and love.
So, as we look at our marriage helps us not to view it as something we do to get something but as something we do to serve the other. When we view our marriage in this way we will begin to see that our disappointment stems from the fact that we have forgotten the purpose of our marriage it is to serve NOT to be served.
even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. (Matthew 20:28 ESV)
But at an even deeper level, we must also realize that even in our marriages we deserve nothing. We sin in our marriages just as we have sinned against you. Which means that as Christians we cannot expect that we will always get what we want from marriage.
God, help me to see that at times of disappointment I must remember to view those disappointments in the right way. I must remember that just as I deserved nothing from You and You were gracious I too can be gracious.
Help us Father to live lives full of grace as we forgive as You forgive and as we are gracious as You are gracious.
I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Prayers For Broken Marriage Because Of Loss Of Job
God, sometimes our circumstances are hard to understand. Things are hard and things change and not always for the better from our limited perspective. But when we are your we can trust that even in loss and times of trial you are working all things for our good.
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28 ESV)
But sometimes marriages are easy when they are comfortable and when things are good. But then something changes or gets hard, like the loss of a job, and marriage is strained and can become less than easy.
But in those times God, we must remember that our marriage while between two sinners is built upon a union that You created. A union that You never promised would be easy or without struggle. But a union nonetheless that You said should never be broken. A union that is built not just on our promises to each other but on Your promises to us.
Promises that You are always with us.
And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. (Matthew 28:20 ESV)
Promises that You are always faithful.
The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he. (Deuteronomy 32:4 ESV)
And Promises that You will always sustain us and bring us through.
Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved. (Psalm 55:22 ESV)
So, Father I pray that when my marriage is no longer easy and when trials enter our relationship that we would remember our commitment to each other and the commitments that You have made to us.
Help us remain strong because of those commitments. Help us to push through and love each other even through the trials and struggles. And that when we reach the other side of those trials and struggles it would be with a deeper commitment to our marriage and with a deeper commitment to you. Give us the strength and grace needed to make it through.
I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Prayers For Broken Marriage Because Of Unfaithful Spouse
God, the marriage relationship is one that you never intended to be broken. Marriage is intended to be between one man and one woman just as you created it to be. But the truth about marriage is that it is also a relationship between two sinners. Sinners that no matter how hard they try will always fall short and continue to sin. Unfortunately, sometimes that sin even enters into our marriages and when it does the effects can be devastating.
But God even in times of deep hurt and sorrow we must remember that our marriages are not about us. They are about bringing honor and glory to you as we are instructed to do in all that we do.
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. (1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV)
But God even when we know that to be true unfaithfulness in marriage can be hard especially when the unfaithful spouse is not repentant and does not want to restore the broken relationship and those times Father we can rest in knowing that you still love us and are still for us because you did not intend for us to be stuck in such a relationship.
God, thank you for the record of the Pharisees asking if it was lawful to divorce and your honest answer.
“Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” (Matthew 19:4-5 ESV)
We so often want to be able to do things in a way that makes sense or the way the world says it would be okay. But you shared in this same story that it is our hardness of hearts that have caused us to sin. Help me to trust in your words and not my own understanding in this area.
And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.” (Matthew 19:9 ESV)
But there are also times, God, when the unfaithful spouse is supposed to repent and does wish to see the marriage relationship restored. In those moments Father we need to remember the amount of grace you have shown in forgiving us and to show that same grace in the way we forgive others.
God, help me not to allow the sin to continue and say what has happened is ok but help me to communicate forgiveness through grace despite their sin. In the same way help me to forgive just as you have been gracious to restore what has been broken.
Father help us to always fight for the restoration of our marriages and to trust that even in our times of deepest hurt you are still good. Help both of us not to be tempted in this way any more.
I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Prayers For Broken Marriage Because Of Pride
God, my marriage is broken and I’m beginning to recognize that it is because of my pride. I so often think I am always right and leave little room for others, especially my spouse.
God, please forgive me for my pride and help me to love my spouse better.
Father, you know that my pride sneaks up in my thoughts and then affects my words and reactions. My pride makes me act in ways that are not loving and country to the way you have called me to live.
I want to love my spouse in a way that is honoring to you and not allow pride to break my marriage any further. Please help my marriage. I pray this in your name, Amen.
Closing Thoughts
Marriage is a beautiful gift from God. However, the devil will try and break them apart because they are part of God’s good plan.
There are many ways that marriages struggle but God is pleased when we come to him in repentance and trust in Him to help restore the marriage.
We hope that there was a prayer here that helped you draw near to God and help you trust God with your broken marriage.
We would love to pray with you as you seek God’s help in restoring your marriage. Please comment below so we can be praying alongside you during this journey. You are not alone.
Hi There. I would like to request a prayer for my marriage, my says it is over and we have now been separated for 1 month, when last we spoke, she said that she does not think that her mind would change in the 6 months separation we are on and she thinks divorce will be the outcome, she does not see her heart changing towards me. So I would like to ask for prayers for God to please give her and I a miracle and change her heart, she said it would take a miracle, so I pray for that. I was not a perfect husband, in fact far from it, but I am working hard at being better and letting God lead me. I want nothing more for her and I than a happy marriage and family, my kids want the same thing, but we need God to change her heart. My name is Frans and her name is Katarina. Your prayers would be greatly appreciated.
At this point, she does not want to see a Councillor with me or anything like that, if we can just get to the point where we both decide to fix it, I know and believe we can, but I need God to change her heart please. Thank you so much.
Praying for your marriage. I know many others are as well. God bless.
My name is Brandon. My wife asked for a separation, but says she hopes she can find her way back to me. I wasnt the best husband at times, but my unwillingness to communicate with her at times, and something I done long ago, still casts a shadow between us, and only amplifies smaller problems. Please pray for us, that she can finally put away her anger, hurt, and sense of betrayal, and see that I am working toward making this the marriage and being the man God intended. Thank you.
Praying for you and your wife, Brandon. I know others will be too. God bless.
Requesting prayer, honestly I think I need a miracle at this point. My husband and I have been married for almost 5 years. In our short five years of marriage we lost our first child (still birth), my mother died, and we had countless battles in court with my older children’s father. He got so fed up that he packed up and left me last March. He filed divorce immediately and we listed our dream home. We only talked when it came to coparenting our baby as he was dating someone else and I couldn’t stand to look at him. I felt abandoned and so did my older kids (his step sons). We accepted a purchase offer on the house immediately and I began transitioning from married mom of 3 in a beautiful home to single mom of 3 having to find a full time job and find an apt. I was so broken. The weekend we closed on our house, he came to me and said he wanted us to get back together. I didn’t think that day would ever come, I had given up hope. I agreed. We went to counseling, he moved in with me and things were so good, for like 6 months. He left me again almost exactly a year after the first time. Neither of us have filed. I feel like I need to. I can’t keep waiting for him to value me and our sons. I don’t want my kids to think this is normal. I don’t know what to do anymore. I pray all the time but I’m so tired.
Praying for you and your family during these challenging times. God bless.
Please pray for me and my husband Asheddie so that he will open his heart to reconcile with me and save our marriage for the love of God. I ask for everyone who sees this to pray for me and him. Pray to heal his hearts from all the hurt and wounds that I have no power to do so. In Jesus name, Amen.
Praying for you and your marriage. God bless.
Please pray for the restoration of my marriage and my family.
Praying for you and your family. God bless.
Please pray for my marriage. My husband Kevin told me he’s filing for divorce. I believe all things are possible with God. In Jesus’ name, amen.
I’m praying for you, Wanda. I know others will be too. Stay strong and trust God.
Please pray for my marriage. My own failure to lead our union and lose myself trying to only please her. My wife Markita has found my weakness as an excuse to build walls of silence and resentments that lead to her asking for a divorce and giving up on our marriage. Her unbelieving gives me little hope for anything I can do so I’ve turned the battle over to God in hopes of a miracle to see her turn around and see Gods purpose and promise of a happy and peaceful marriage focusing on Him. I’m thankful God has helped guide me to be a leader but she refuses to turn away from the devils schemes.
Praying for you. I know others will be too. God bless.
Please pray for my marriage. My husband wants to end the marriage. We have two teens.
Praying for you and your family. God bless.
Please Pray for my Marriage. In my first marriage my husband Committed adultery. This is my second marriage, I marriage a Christian man and thought this marriage would be wonderful, filled with Gods blessings. We have been marriage for 10 years and for most of that we haven’t been Intimate and there’s been a lot of lies prior. The secrets keep on coming out and I’m getting tried of it. I’m torn if I should stay or to go .I feel so empty, with not much hope I want Gods will for my life. Need a miracle please.
Praying for you. God bless.
I so desperately need prayer for my marriage. I am the reason my wife wants a divorce, but I have asked God for forgiveness and will do whatever it takes to win her back. She is very angry and hurtful. She says that there is nothing that will change her mind. I pray that God will change her mind and that she will give me one more chance. I know that I don’t deserve it.
Please pray for a heart change for her and that God will work on my heart to change and that I will be a good and faithful husband to her. I truly am heartbroken over this and what I have done to her and my family. Please Lord Jesus redeem my family.
Praying for you. I know others are as well. God bless.
