We sometimes seem to argue as often as the sun rises each morning. We have arguments within our marriages, families, friendships, the church, and wherever there are social interactions.
When I was young in my faith I could argue and argue loudly. It’s by grace and much prayer that we can grow in being more like Christ, even in our arguments.
Prayer can help us as we argue in these different situations. Prayer can help us as we go through these arguments and can help us not hurt others with the argument.
The Bible asks and answers a very appropriate question:
“What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask.” (James 4:1-2)
These prayers will help you process these different types of arguments. Hopefully, before you press send on that email, call up a friend to argue, or step back into your home where the argument you started this morning is waiting for you, you can stop and pray.
Please comment below if we can be praying for you in this area of arguments. What a privilege it is so to walk alongside others that are growing in their faith.
Short Prayer For Arguments In Relationships
God, I know that the argument is a problem within myself. I crave to be right, maybe I even am right, but it is causing an argument with (name). I am passionate about this situation and I don’t want to lose.
God, you and I are both aware that (name) is also a sinner simply trying to get me to conform to his/her way. Often times we may even hurt one another within these arguments. Help me to see (name) in the way you see them. Help me avoid hurting him/her.
Father, I pray that you help me to be humble, to surrender my pride, and ultimately glorify you as we continue discussing what started this argument. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Prayer For Argument In My Marriage
God, I don’t even know how my marriage got here. I am not getting anything that I want and feel so dishonored by my spouse. It feels like our marriage is under attack and we are always arguing.
Father, I ask you to help my spouse and me to live according to how you call each of us to live within a marriage relationship. You have called wives to respect their husbands and to submit to them as they do to you.
Help this type of relationship be done with honor and not as a control issue. Allow there to be grace as we learn what it looks like to love in this way rather than always argue. Help us both to realize that we are both valued in your eyes even though our roles are different.
God, I pray that we also respect the idea that the husband should love and lead. This calls for husbands to sacrifice their desires. So many of our arguments in marriage are because these roles are out of order.
God, I pray that we recognize that our arguments could be handled in different ways so that we may grow to be more Christ-like, rather than selfishly wanting to get our own way.
Help each of us to cherish one another and not cut each other down.
Lord, remind each of us of the beauty of marriage and help us to cling to each other rather than continuing to argue with each other. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
This prayer was adapted from the verses found in Ephesians 5:22-33.
Prayer For Argument Within My Family
Heavenly Father, you have called me to love others, but right now it is very hard to love my family as we are in this argument. They have completely tried to control my life. They have manipulated the situation so that I have to agree with them.
God, help me to remember you have given me my family. They will always be part of my life and I don’t want to argue with them. Help me to pray for my family rather than argue with them.
Further, you have called us to care for our families as we learn how to care for your church.
For if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church? (1 Timothy 3:5 ESV)
So, God, I pray that you help me to learn how to love my family well rather than always arguing with them. Help me to surrender my pride and humble myself so that I can love them. I pray this in your name, Amen.
Prayer For An Argument With A Friend
God, my friend and I are arguing and I don’t like it. He/she has not been very kind to me lately and it makes me so uncomfortable. (Name) has resorted to ignoring me.
I am tempted to simply walk away from the friendship. I need your guidance to help in this difficult situation.
Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. (Romans 12:16 ESV)
God, when my friend seems to be hurting me help me not to argue back. Help me not to blast hurtful words back at my friend. I do not want to repay evil for evil but my human nature seems to so quickly want to argue. Help me to reject my human temptation.
God, when my friend wrongs me and I am tempted to argue help me to instead remember that you are the great judge. I can rest in your rather than get revenge through further arguing.
God, give me compassion for my friend. Sometimes we argue because he/she is hurting. Give me compassion to understand what might be going on in his/her life. Help me to have a listening ear rather than be quick to give advice or even argue against what he/she is sharing.
God, instead of arguing with my friend help me to instead help my friend with their needs. I know this world will not bring justice but you have forgiven me much so I want to extend that same forgiveness to my friend.
God, this will not be easy but I am confident that I can do this not with my own willpower but because of the Holy Spirit living inside of me. So I humbly come before you praying that your power flows through my life when I am tempted to argue with my friend.
Prayer For Arguments Within The Church
God, this is one of the hardest arguments I have ever been in, your church is your body and it feels as if we should not argue, but we do. I strongly believe that I am holding the truth and don’t want to back down.
God, Could I be wrong? Or did they misunderstand me? If I’m not wrong, will you help me to be honorable even as we discuss this topic?
God, they have hurt me so much as we argue over this topic that I am tempted to turn around and mistreat him/her. Guard me against attacking, simply just to get my way. I’m also tempted to gather a group of people and defend myself, but I pray that you give me a listening ear.
God, help me to get into your word, seek counsel from wiser individuals, and be in constant prayer with you. If the argument continues and the other is in sin help me to handle it in a way that honors you.
If they are still not listening to me about the sin in their lives, help me to follow the steps laid out in scripture.
To go with them with a witness, not bully them but to hopefully bring them back to you and a restored relationship with the church. If they still don’t listen help me to present it to Church leadership so they can help.
God, if I am wrong, help me humbly apologize. Help me to seek restoration with this individual and with the church body. I pray this in your name, Amen.
Prayer For An Argument At Work
God, often time at work I feel evaluated. Clients complain bosses point out faults, and paychecks even seem to evaluate me every month. As I feel attacked it seems easy to attack back and so there are many arguments at work.
I pray that you first and foremost help me to remember my identity is in you alone. It is because you have chosen me, saved me, and hold me that I can be called a child of God.
When I’m tempted to find my worth in the work I do help me to stop and remember my worth is in you alone.
God, when I’m not focused on you it is easy to focus on others. It is easy to see the faults they have work and start arguments with them or about them with others. Instead help me to pray for my co-workers.
When others attack me at work help me to remember that they also are a sinner in need of you, Jesus. Help me to humble myself before you and my coworker or boss. Allow me to try and understand what they are actually saying.
If I do end up getting in a heated argument at work please help me to step back and see where my ego may be inflated. Help me to see if there is an area where I am being selfish or prideful. Allow me to handle arguments in a way that defuses the situation rather than increases them.
Arguments are going to happen. Many times it comes down to wanting to be right and holding on to our pride. God calls us to something different. Jesus challenged us to turn the other cheek, love our enemies, and live differently than this world.
We live like this not so we can earn our way to heaven but because God calls us to this way of life. He calls us to this, not for our misery but rather so others will see the love and grace of God.
When you are tempted to argue with different relationships our hope is that you instead turn to God in prayer and seek His desire for your life rather than the human temptation to continue the argument.
If there is any way we can be praying for you in regard to the arguments in your life please feel free to comment below.
