Parenting is the hardest job you will ever do. There’s, unfortunately, no instruction manual! It’s a gift to be a parent. It’s not something everyone has the privilege of so it’s important to praise God for this wonderful gift!

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights” (James 1:17, NIV).

One way to continuously parent your kids is to pray for them. It is only natural that if/when you become a grandparent you pray for them as well. It’s never too early to start doing this! You should be praying for your grandbaby while they are in the womb and long before you first teach them to pray!

I will give you 7 prayers for your unborn grandchild, but feel free to customize them to your situation!

Short Prayer for Unborn Grandchild

Dear God, we are thrilled that we are having a grandchild! We pray for their mother that she will be healthy and have a good pregnancy to bring the baby into this world safely.

We pray for a quick and safe delivery. Ultimately we pray that you wrap our unborn grandchild in love and that he will know the love of Christ from the moment he is born. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer for a Safe Pregnancy for Unborn Grandchild

Dear God, we are so grateful for the gift of a grandchild. You have blessed us abundantly and we cannot thank you enough for the precious life of our grandbaby. You have called us to be fruitful and multiply and we are grateful you have given that gift to our children as well.

We know that giving birth to a child is not something you grant to everyone. We pray in a special way for (name) who is carrying our grandchild. We pray she is able to stay healthy through these months. If she is experiencing sickness please take that away from her.

Help her to have the energy to exercise as much as she desires and complete the tasks she needs to in the coming months before baby arrives. May all the tests and scans come back normal. May you calm her fears as she prepares for motherhood.

Thank you for the safety of a mother’s womb. We call upon your words from the book of Psalms: “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well” (Psalm 139: 13-14, NIV).

Pregnancy can be a difficult experience for a mama, but it is a miracle from the beginning that you knit together our precious grandbaby in the womb. He is fearfully and wonderfully made and we hope he always knows that. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer for Safe Labor and Delivery of Unborn Grandchild

Oh God, labor and delivery can be so challenging. The Scriptures say, “A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world” (John 16:21, NIV).

Child birth such an unknown experience. You can plan as much as you want, but things don’t always go the way you want them to. I hope that the labor and delivery of our unborn grandchild goes the way that their parents have planned.

If it is not your will for this to happen, then I ask you give his parents peace and wisdom to make the proper decisions for a successful birth. It can be really scary when things don’t go according to plan so we pray that your arms are wrapped around our sweet grandchild.

I ask that the labor and delivery be as painless as possible. I hope it helps our (daughter/daughter-in-law) to grow in holiness. May she offer her sufferings up to you to save sinners. May she be a witness to the medical professionals in the room of a strong Christian woman. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer for Medical Professionals During Labor and Delivery of Unborn Grandchild

Holy God, please bless the hands of the medical professionals involved in the labor and delivery of our unborn grandchild. Give them words to encourage and support (name’s of daughter/DIL/son/SIL). Please put kind doctors and nurses in their room as they go through such an emotional and difficult experience.

Give the medical professionals the wisdom to make the right decisions if there are complications. If there are complications please guide their hands as they work.

Give them gentle words to explain any worrisome scenarios. God you are the ultimate protector so please just wrap each person involved in your loving and protective embrace. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer for Parents of Unborn Grandchild

Holy God, parenting is the hardest job I will ever have. It never ceases as children grow, but especially in the beginning it can be very overwhelming and emotional. I pray our (daughter/DIL) doesn’t experience post-partum depression so that she can focus on healing and snuggling our new grandbaby.

Being a parent is an amazing gift that not everyone wants or gets to experience. Please give the parents of our unborn grandchild wisdom and strength as they prepare to raise this baby as a disciple. If they do not teach their child to be a follower of Christ then the world will teach them not to.

Help them to take the role of raising a disciple seriously. The Scriptures say, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.  These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.  Impress them on your children.

Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.  Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates” (Deuteronomy 6:5-9, NIV).

I hope our unborn grandchild’s parents will take these verses to heart. I hope they teach him to love God more than anything else. I hope they have images and signs of You throughout their home as daily reminders to live a life of prayer and love.

Most of all, help them to be Your face, hands, and feel to their child and to the world. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer for Guidance as Grandparents

Lord, I am so excited to be a grandparent! It is something I have longed for for awhile. My greatest desire for my unborn grandchild is that he will grow up to know, love, and serve God.

I fear that someday he will choose to not be a disciple. The world is a scary place. I already worry that he will give in to temptations and follow the way of the enemy. Grant me peace Oh, Lord as I really don’t need to worry about this right now.

As I prepare to be a grandparent I ask for wisdom. I need wisdom to know how to best lead my grandchild to Jesus. Help me to always be your face, hands, and feet. May my grandchild always know of your love through me. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer that Unborn Grandchild will Know the Love of Christ

Lord, your love never fails. I know you will actively pursue my grandchild all the days of his life. Help him to always be attentive to your voice. Help his parents and I to teach him how to pray so that he knows and has a relationship with You.

God, I hope our grandchild knows how he was created in your image and likeness. I hope he knows how much he is loved by his parents, me, and most importantly you. I trust in You to always show up and support our grandchild. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Concluding Thoughts

It can be difficult to know how to be a grandparent. It’s a rewarding job, but you want to make sure you don’t over step your boundaries. Giving unsolicited parenting advice is not appreciated and can be overwhelming. Afterall, your children aren’t wild teenagers anymore and they have their own lives.

Being supportive of your grandchild’s parent’s decisions is a crucial part of parenting.

However, you also want to be able to lovingly instruct your grandchild in the way of the Lord. If you don’t know where to start as a grandparent, go to God and the Scriptures.

Here is a simple prayer for you to start with: “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace” (Numbers 6:24-26, NIV).

Begin praying for your grandchild’s safety and continue to return to God to ask for guidance on how to best help guide your grandchild to know, love, and honor God all the days of their life.
