8 Encouraging Prayers For Starting A New Job

Congratulations on beginning a new job!  Would you like to thank God for this blessing in your life?

As a person who has started a new job several times in my life, I encourage you to focus on what you’re doing in your workplace, and not worry about comparing yourself to anyone else–even as the “newbie.”  Live into this encouragement from the Apostle Paul as well:

“But each one must carefully scrutinize his own work [examining his actions, attitudes, and behavior], and then he can have the personal satisfaction and inner joy of doing something commendable without comparing himself to another” (Galatians 6.4-5, AMP).

The inner joy Paul speaks of is why having a job, whether it’s a new one or not, can be so fulfilling.  When you start a new job, you want to do well and make a good impression, of course.  But don’t let expectations paralyze you.  Accept the responsibility with grace and live into the job and what it requires.

You may also want to extend prayers before you go to work or to pray for your boss.

These eight encouraging prayers for starting a new job cover a spectrum of scenarios in the work world. We invite you to find the one that fits your circumstance and start praying! You are welcome to alter the wording as needed for your situation. Let God hear your gratitude as you begin to pray.

We invite you to share your situation and your prayer requests with us in the comments section below.  Let us hear from you!

As you pray, you may find that what seems daunting or unclear, becomes acceptable and doable.

Short Prayer For Starting A New Job

Dear God, I am starting a new job and I am so thankful to you for sending it my way.  I am excited to begin, and yet also nervous because I want to make a good first impression and not mess up.  Help me to focus and calm down and to do my best today.  In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray, Amen.

Prayer For First Day Of Work

Heavenly Father, today is my first day of work!  I’ve never had a job before and today is the day.  I’m so happy that they decided to hire me and I’m thrilled to have a job that will pay me money that I can use for what I need.

I don’t want to freak out because I’m so excited but I can barely contain myself–I have a job!  I know I’m young and this is more responsibility than I’ve ever had, but I think I’m ready for it.  I ask that you help me to concentrate and be able to follow their directions today.

I want to do well on my first day and prove to them, and to myself, that they made a good decision in hiring me. Thank you, Lord, for this opportunity.  I give you thanks in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer For First Day At A New Job

Lord God, I was worried when I had to leave my old job, whether I’d find another job or not.  But here it is–my first day at a new job, a new workplace.  I am so grateful for your provision that led me to this opportunity.

I’m glad I have some work experience so this doesn’t feel so daunting, but it’s still new people, a new boss, a new environment.  Help me to settle in well today and be at ease with my new co-workers.  I just want to do my part and contribute toward the team goals and everything.

I pray for safe travel, with no delays, and for a positive day today.  I pray this in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer For Beginning New Job

Lord, I feel off-balance as I pray this.  I’ve had odd jobs before, but this week is when I start a job in an actual office, an actual workplace, with other employees.  I’m not sure what to expect because thus far in my life, I’ve only worked by myself on various tasks.

Will I be able to get along with everyone?  Will they accept me?  How do I fit in with them and with what is expected?  I have so many questions, Lord, but I don’t think I’ll have any answers until my first day is completed.  As the day approaches, I ask for calmness and peace in my mind and heart.

I just want to do a good job and get along with folks.  Help me understand my particular part in the work process and enable me to do my best.  That is my hope and that is my prayer, in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer For Getting Hired

Father God, I give you thanks and praise that I just heard I was hired for my first job ever!  I was so worried until I got the call just a few minutes ago.  I am relieved and filled with joy!

I got hired!  I now have a job and can start earning money!  This is your hand of provision extended into my life and I am so grateful.

In a few days, I will actually start this new job and I want to be as prepared as I can.  Help me to do what I need to do to be successful and fulfill what is being asked of me at work.  Thank you, Lord, for getting me to this point.  I ask for your continued guidance as I begin, and live into, this new job.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayer For Networking At My New Job

Dear God, I am discovering that at my new job, there are so many other people who I need to connect with, not just as co-workers, but as part of my expanding business network.

Although I want to do everything I need to do for my job and its tasks, help me find opportunities to network with other people along the way.  I want to build strong ties with people so I can help them in their career and they can help me in mine.

Help me take a long view and have patience as I find and develop these key relationships.  I am sincere and honest in what I seek and want others to be the same toward me.  I pray this prayer in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer For How To Congratulate Co-Worker On Promotion

Lord, I am conflicted.  I have been in my new job for a while now and have done good work, I believe.  But last week I found out that I did not get the promotion I sought.  My co-worker got it instead.

I understand that the leadership team makes the decisions they make, but I was disappointed.  Not so much because she got it, but more that I did not.  I don’t have any bad feelings toward her personally, just disappointment professionally for me.

I don’t want to dwell on this or have a pity party, but I do ask for guidance on how to congratulate her and be sincere in it.  I don’t want to be fake or inauthentic.  Help give me the words to say and be at ease in that situation.  I pray this in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer About My New Promotion At Work

God in heaven, it happened!  I got a new promotion at work!  I am so happy right now because this was so unexpected.  I have been doing consistent work for quite a while so I didn’t really consider asking for a promotion at all, but then it dropped in my lap.

It also comes with a raise, for which I am also grateful as the extra income will definitely help our home situation.  I want to do even better work now that the company has noticed and rewarded what I have already done. I ask that you help me live into the new responsibilities and to meet what is expected of me.

Thank you for this wonderful blessing in my life.  Thank you for your provision through it.  Thank you for this day and this job and this opportunity!  In the name of Jesus, my Provider, I pray, Amen.

Final Thoughts

Getting a job is such a positive experience.  You have applied, interviewed, and now you have been hired!  You’re going to start a new job after leaving an old one, or this may be your first job ever.

Whatever the situation, it makes sense to pray to God about starting a new job.  Praying about it can bring you closer to God and give you peace to ease your anxiety or overcome your fears.

Working at a job, if we are able, is a good thing. Work is rewarding on so many levels and is a way that God provides for us, as the wise author of Proverbs reminds us:

All hard work brings a profit,
but mere talk leads only to poverty” (Proverbs 14.23, NIV).

So, take some moments to celebrate your new job, your new hiring, and your new opportunity. And, as you celebrate, remember to give thanks to God in prayer, for it is by God’s hand that this new job has come your way.  May these prayers help you gain insight into how much God cares for you and wants you to be fulfilled in life.
